1. Until the middle of the seventeenth century, people of African descent occupied a number of social positions in the North Atlantic seaboard British colonies, and the institution of slavery was neither fully codified nor fully consolidated. Why did this “terrible transformation” occur and was it inevitable?
2. Throughout the history of slavery in the North Atlantic British colonies and the United States, slaves resisted in many ways. What were the main forms of slave resistance and what were their effects?
3. During and after American Revolution, the future of the institution of slavery was in doubt. Subsequently it flourished and expanded rapidly in the South while it died out in the North. Why and how did this happen?
4. Despite their legal powerlessness and the repression that they continuously faced, enslaved people, who were descended from many African nationalities and ethnicities, were able from the colonial period to the Civil War to construct a culture and ethnic identity of their own. How did they do this? And what were the main elements, forms, and institutions of this culture.
5. How might subsequent US history have been different if, during the Civil War and Reconstruction, the plantations of the South had been divided, and ex-slaves had been given plots of land and the means to farm them?
